“You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.” — Psalm 16:11

Enjoying God is not a bonus to the Christian life — it is the essence of it.

Many think of the Christian walk as nothing more than behavior management. They do what God tells them to because they don’t want to suffer the consequences of disobedience.

But God is not merely a rule-giver to be obeyed. He is the fountain of all joy — the one being in the universe worthy enough, good enough, beautiful enough to satisfy the deepest longings of the human heart. Every joy, every pleasure, every moment of genuine happiness we have ever tasted is a drop from a spring that traces back to him. If we search for lasting happiness anywhere but from the fountain itself, then the earthly streams of our joy will quickly dry up, leaving us unsatisfied.

Obedience that follows from fear is slavery. But obedience that follows from happiness is freedom. Thus, the Christian life isn’t primarily about behavior management — it’s about beholding. When we see God as he actually is, happiness in that beholding is the essential reaction. God made us for Himself, both to enjoy him and show his glory by it.
